About the Health Services Administrative Fellowship — UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside

The UPMC Health Services Division Presbyterian Shadyside track includes rotations at a multitude of UPMC hospitals in Pittsburgh’s urban core.

UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, the flagship hospital and academic hub of the UPMC system, serves as the central location for incoming HSD fellows in Allegheny County. This Hospital operates on two campuses located approximately two miles apart — known respectively as the “Oakland Campus” and the “Shadyside Campus.” Each of these campuses maintains a distinct personality and purpose within the UPMC organization, and serves a vital role in each community.

UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside is a level 1 trauma center that holds more than 1,100 beds offering comprehensive services in Heart and Vascular care, Organ Transplantation, Oncology, Orthopedics and more. In the near future Presbyterian Shadyside will embark on the journey of constructing two new innovative patient towers, one at each campus. Fellows also have regular exposure to Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC, UPMC Mercy and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

Year One Opportunities

Fellows spend their first year rotating with the executive management team at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, as well as other HSD executives in both hospital and physician practice operations.

Throughout rotations, fellows will gain structured experience in the areas of Hospital Operations, Physician Practice Management, Revenue Cycle, Budgeting, and Finance.

Core rotations include:

• Clinical Operations & Ancillary Services
• Leadership
• Nursing
• Physician Practice Management
• Support Services Administration
• Quality
• Finance
• Human Resources

Elective rotations include (but are not limited to):

• Insurance Services Division
• Community Provider Services
• International & Commercial Services Division
• Cancer Center
• Chief Medical and Scientific Office

Other opportunities approved by Fellowship Directors based on interests.

Project examples

Examples of projects, roles, etc. that administrative fellows may work on include: 

• Conducting process and workflow improvement studies 
• Coordinating various task forces 
• Serving a variety of analytical roles 
• Establishing new clinics 
• Assisting with the implementation quality-of-care improvement initiatives 
• Assisting with the integration of clinical departments across campuses 
• Exposure to financial analyses 
• Championing various projects with senior leadership

Year Two Opportunities

The second year of the fellowship allows more flexibility in satisfying career objectives with an emphasis on gaining direct associate management experience.

Based on the organization’s needs, fellows may have opportunities in the following:

• Extended or additional rotations 
• Department or clinic management
• Planning and marketing 
• Information systems 
• Health information management 
• Human resources
• Project work as assigned by the chief executive officer, chief operations officer, or other members of senior management

Preceptors

Roles and expectations

The fellow is also assigned a preceptor during each rotation. Preceptors are responsible for guidance and progress by:

• Defining projects
• Ensuring that the fellow's needs are being met
• Meeting with the fellow regularly
• Providing timely feedback regarding performance and progress

Fellows are responsible for providing their advisors and preceptors with all necessary information to ensure a mutually beneficial experience.
