G. Nicholas Beckwith, past Chair of the UPMC Board of Directors, and his wife Dotty, started supporting UPMC in 1991.
The Beckwiths gave $500,000 to support innovation in nursing as gratitude for care Dotty received at UPMC Shadyside. They then made a transformative gift of $5 million 11 years later.
UPMC matched their gift to fund the Beckwith Institute’s programs in three key areas:
Improving Patient Care and Finding New Treatments
Today, The Beckwith Institute provides funding through two key programs.
Frontline innovation
This program focuses on empowering forward-thinking ideas that directly impact and improve bedside care and current clinical practice.
Clinical transformation
This program funds research to discover breakthrough treatments, tools, and processes that will improve health care in the future.
The Beckwith Institute’s exciting programs let those at the forefront of UPMC’s care— our doctors, nurses, and staff — to:
- Find and apply new treatment approaches.
- Address and fix real problems in health care.
- Make sure that UPMC offers the safest and most quality care possible, today, and tomorrow.
