Investing in Our Communities

At UPMC, we’re dedicated to delivering world-class care by providing our patients access to modern facilities, cutting-edge technology, and the latest equipment. Last year, we invested nearly $1 billion to support improvements in buildings, technology, and access to services.

UPMC Mercy Pavilion

In spring 2023, we celebrated the grand opening of the state-of-the-art UPMC Mercy Pavilion. Home to UPMC Vision Institute and UPMC Rehabilitation Institute, UPMC Mercy Pavilion is a destination for patients with specialized vision or physical rehabilitation needs. The new pavilion also includes eight eye disease operating rooms, 83 eye exam rooms, and 106,000 square feet of research space.

UPMC Presbyterian

Scheduled to open in 2026, the expansion of UPMC Presbyterian will continue to provide Life Changing Medicine from our world-renowned physicians and clinical teams. UPMC Presbyterian will feature 636 state-of-the-art patient rooms, plus amenities such as rooftop gardens and flexible outdoor spaces. Once completed, the 17-story, 900,000-square-foot project will transform the landscape of Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood with a stunning architectural design.

Creating Stronger, Healthier Communities

We’re working every day to enhance access to people-focused care by improving our services and facilities. Our commitment to the health and quality of life in the communities we serve extends to:

  • New outpatient care centers in seven locations throughout Pennsylvania.
  • An expanded UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry, Pa.
  • New specialty facilities, including UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at UPMC Somerset, and a new inpatient treatment facility at UPMC Western Behavioral Health at Twin Lakes.

At UPMC, Life Changing Medicine means being committed to the regions we serve.

Economic Impact

As the largest nongovernmental employer in Pennsylvania, UPMC contributed more than $50 billion to the state’s economy in 2022. In addition to our 95,000-plus employees, we’re continually investing in our communities and helping to create jobs. Our economic impact includes:

  • Accounting for more than a quarter of the statewide economic impact of Pennsylvania hospitals.
  • Supporting nearly 184,000 total jobs directly and indirectly (estimated).
  • Adding approximately 5,200 new union jobs during hospital construction projects.
  • Providing $318 million in diversity spending in 2022 to support minority- and women-owned businesses.
