Michael Barber

Michael had surgery after his mild heart attack in 2016. Everything seemed to recover normally, except his kidneys. Suffering serious complications, Michael chose organ transplantation over dialysis. This was a life changing event for Michael and in 2020, he and his wife endowed the Michael J. Barber, Jr. Kidney Transplant Fund to further clinical research on living donations.

Beth Howell

After an abrupt trip to UPMC Presbyterian to receive a double stent in her heart and losing a dear friend to heart complications, Beth and the Fraternal Order of Eagles felt compelled to give back. As of January 2021, Beth and the FOE have donated more than $101,000 to the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute. Brian Shanahan

Brian was caught off-guard with an unexpected cancer diagnosis. He chose UPMC. He asks, “Why go anywhere else in the country when we have the best medicine in the world right here?"

As a result of his experience, he and his wife, Karen, have donated over $3 million to date to the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and has helped create other giving opportunities.
