Nutrition management and counseling is an important part of the treatment process, whether or not you require medical or surgical intervention.
At the Gastrointestinal Rehabilitation and Transplant Program, our specialized dietitians collaborate with doctors, pharmacists, and nurses to develop patient-specific nutritional plans for the best outcomes.
They also provide individualized diet counseling in the hospital, at clinic appointments, or at your home.
Nutritional Therapies for Intestinal Disorders
You will go through a nutritional assessment to determine your appropriate needs and course of action.
Some nutritional therapies may include:
- Enteral nutrition (tube feeding)
- Diet modification
- Electrolyte and fluid management
Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is another type of therapy for people who cannot receive food orally (by mouth) because of severe intestinal failure or other gastrointestinal disorders.
This form of nutrition is intravenously injected into the blood stream and can take up to 10 to 12 hours per day.
Our dietitians assist with the management of TPN therapy, although many patients are able to administer TPN at home in the evening.
