Cardiac rhythm management devices are small battery-powered devices that are placed inside your body and connected to your heart. They help monitor and control your heart rhythm.

There are two common types: pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators. A pacemaker sends electrical impulses to your heart that help it to beat normally. An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) monitors your heartbeat and detects abnormal heart rhythms. If needed, the ICD will administer electric impulses to restore a normal heart rhythm.
