A pioneer in cardiovascular health since 1956, we were the first in the region to perform open heart surgery and the first to perform coronary artery balloon angioplasty. Other "firsts" include the implantation of a drug-eluting coronary stent, percutaneous (minimally invasive) aortic valve procedures (TAVR) and FDA-approved percutaneous mitral valve device.

For heart attack patients, the national goal is to have 90 minutes or less pass from the first medical contact with the patient until the artery is open. All UPMC hospitals in Central Pa. constantly refine how we care for heart attack patients, improving our process to help save heart muscle.
