As a survivor, it is important that you follow certain guidelines for check ups and screenings with your doctor(s). These guidelines will change as your survivorship extends past certain milestones, such as the five-year mark after completion of treatment. Guidelines also vary for each patient, depending on their medical history and course of treatment.
- History and physical exam 1-4 times per year as appropriate for the first 5 years
- History and physical exam annually after 5 years
- Periodic screening for changes in family history and referral to genetic counseling as necessary
- Education, monitoring, and referral for lymphedema management
- Annual mammogram
- Annual gynecological exam for women on tamoxifen (who still have a uterus)
- Ongoing bone health and bone mineral monitoring for women on an aromatase inhibitor or who experience ovarian failure after treatment
Important: Recent studies suggest that an active lifestyle, healthy diet, limited alcohol intake, and achieving and maintaining an ideal body weight (20-25 BMI) may reduce chances of a recurrence.
