Breast Biopsy

If you or your doctor notice a lump or any other abnormality in your breast, your doctor may suspect breast disease.

Types of Breast Disease

  • Breast cancer is a disease caused by abnormal cell growth in the breast. Breast cancer cells can spread to other organs and tissues throughout the body, usually beginning with the lymph nodes.
  • Fibrocystic disease is the presence of noncancerous (benign), fluid-filled cysts in the milk-producing tissues of the breast.
  • Breast duct papilloma is the growth of one or more tiny, benign lumps in the breast duct.

Because it is not possible to determine what kind of breast disease is present through observation alone, your doctor may refer you for further testing, which may include performing a biopsy.

The Role of the Pathologist

The pathologist will examine the breast tissue biopsy sample and provide a diagnosis that will help your doctor formulate the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
