CARLISLE, Pa. — UPMC Magee-Womens opened its Level II neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) today at UPMC Carlisle. The new NICU features six beds with equipment for advanced care and monitoring, and a neonatal team that provide specialized care for babies who are born premature as early as 32 weeks or who need extra time and support. This include babies that have trouble breathing, low blood sugar, antibiotic therapy or just needs that extra time to grow.

The NICU team is composed of neonatologists, neonatal advanced practice providers, and specialized nurses and respiratory therapists. The team works in collaboration with the Level III NICU at UPMC Harrisburg and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh to ensure that each baby receives the best possible care and has access to pediatric subspecialists when needed. UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country, and is ranked sixth on U.S. News & World Report’s ‘Best Children’s Hospitals’ Honor Roll 2022-23. In addition to being named in the honor roll, UPMC Children’s Hospital is ranked for excellence in all pediatric specialty areas and is among the top 10 in six specialties including (No.4) in Neonatology.

"We are excited to be able to provide advance care for babies delivered here in Carlisle. This Level II NICU is staffed by very experienced neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, NICU nurses, respiratory therapists and other ancillary personnel to support critical infants," said Jarrod Johnson, president, UPMC Carlisle. “We are committed to continuing our expansion of advanced care while delivering excellence in all we do for our patients and families in this community.”

UPMC Magee-Womens understands that having a baby in NICU can be stressful for families. To help reduce the stressors surrounding an admission into the NICU, the team has established several resources to encourage family-centered care:

  • Family-centered rounds
  • 24-hour advanced care and monitoring
  • Breastfeeding consultants
  • NICU Social services team
  • Comprehensive and collaborative discharge planning
