UPMC in central Pa. has partnered with the Capital Area Girls on the Run to bring this life-changing, character development program to girls in central Pennsylvania since 2011. The organization's mission is to “inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident” using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
Trained volunteer coaches lead small teams through research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the 10-week program, girls in third through eighth grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their words and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with a girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event. In the fifth year, more than 1,600 girls at 74 sites in Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry and part of Lebanon counties participated, under the guidance of nearly 300 coaches.
