Educational Presentations

Lunch-and-Learns (45 mins), Mini-Mindfuls (20 to 25 minutes), and Nutritional Nuggets (20 to 25 minutes) — Delivered in-person or virtually by UPMC clinicians and educators.

Are You Listening?

In the enthusiasm to make our point, do we miss the opportunity to really hear what our boss, fellow employee, or family member is trying to communicate? Learn techniques and the positive benefits of active listening.

Growing Old Better Be Funny

A light-hearted look at the many physical changes that occur as we age. Emphasis is placed on wellness promotion through health choices.

Stress

We take it for granted that stress is a normal part of life, but does it really have to be? Learn the real purpose of the stress response, how it manifests in our bodies over time, and what we can do to both manage and prevent it.

Good news: Stress does not have to be part of our daily lives, so get rid of it!

Holiday Stress!

The holidays create a unique challenge. This presentation outlines some of the challenges of the traditional holiday season and tips for coping. Discover the benefits of involving family members as much as possible.

Happiness Is an Inside Job

Life is a building process — a journey, not a destination. This seminar is about each one of us as a unique individual and our part in that building process as it impacts our personal happiness.

The Benefits of Sleep

Sleep is vital for health on many levels; sacrificing sleep can be equally as detrimental.

A good night’s sleep can positively affect your cardiovascular system, immune system, increase focus and awareness, put you in a better mood, and so much more. A poor night’s sleep can do just the opposite. So, when the time comes, “go to bed.”

Humor — It Does a Body Good

Humor and laughter are gifts we can give ourselves to help survive our challenging, stress-filled world. They can play a vital role in living, learning, working, and being healthy.

In this session, we will explore the physical and emotional effects of humor and laughter and their impact on stress levels and health. You will also learn easy, fun-filled, practical tips for getting more “smileage” out of your life and work.

Counting on Good Health? Know Your Numbers

Numbers are an integral part of our daily lives. Learn what the numbers of important health tests and screenings mean and how they add up to a healthier you.

Understanding Diabetes

Just what is diabetes? Learn the types of diabetes as well as common symptoms and diagnoses of diabetes. We review healthy food choices for meal planning, as well as the importance of physical activity.

Ready! Set! Organized!

If only I could get organized! Explore ways and share organization tips for the home and workplace to make life simpler and accomplish more with less effort.

What Color Is Your Personality?

Are you blue, green, yellow, or red, or a mixture of all four? Learn what makes you tick and how and why you might drive another crazy without even trying.

This presentation is great fun for small- to medium-sized groups. We administer a brief preference test before discussing the results in an open forum.

Why Wellness?

Wellness encompasses so much more than just diet and exercise.

We’ll discuss eight dimensions of wellness, including emotional, social, spiritual, intellectual, and more. Put them all together, and you have the potential to generate a truly happy and healthy lifestyle — something everyone deserves.

Skin Cancer: How to Prevent and Detect

Skin cancer can affect anyone. An alarming 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime!

Learn about the three types of skin cancer: basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma. Understand the ABCDEs of melanoma and discover ways to prevent skin cancer.

Introduction to Tobacco/Vape-Free Living

This presentation provides a general overview of the nature of tobacco/vape-use addiction, complications, benefits of quitting, treatment options, and resources.

This presentation can serve as a foundation-laying approach to stimulate thought for a general audience and serve to encourage and provide supportive tools to a current tobacco user, ex-tobacco user, or a friend or family member of a tobacco user.

Baby Steps to Exercise

What constitutes exercise or activity?

For some, their job requires so much activity during their day that they don't have the energy for exercise. For others, they have never been active and don't know where to start.

Incorporating exercise into your routine does not need to be intimidating. Your goal does not have to be a marathon —it is all about finding your motivation, trying simple activities, and thinking about how it makes you feel. What have you got to lose?

Heart-Healthy Eating

Food choices can be a challenge in today’s world with all the offerings available. Learn priorities when it comes to taking care of our heart — dietary fats, sodium, and fiber.

Take away ideas for increasing variety in your choices, but keeping balance and moderation a part of your routine.

Sneaky Swaps for Savory Success

Our registered dietitian will offer a few “sneaky swaps” or healthier substitutions for family favorite meals. It will lead to better health for everyone at the dinner table without sacrificing flavor.

Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs

What are the most important nutrients needed in today’s world? Should you be taking supplements? How do you know if supplements are safe?

Meal Planning to Go

Packing a lunch can be a more affordable and nutritious alternative, but it requires planning. Try innovative ideas to eat healthier and save money.

Nutritional Nuggets

Hydration

The human body is up to 60% water. This impacts our daily hydration requirements.

How much water do we need every day? Where are the best places to get it? And what is the impact of not getting enough? Drink from the well of knowledge!

Caffeine

Caffeine may feel like an energy boost, but how much is too much? Why does quantity matter, and how do you know if your cup is overflowing with caffeine?

Learn what a healthy amount is and steps for cutting back while minimizing withdrawal symptoms.

Snacking and Vending Machines

Between meals, your stomach may rumble, and your energy level may dip. Did you pack a snack? Is the vending machine calling your name?

Learn the healthiest snacks to bring from home or buy from the machine. Consider options — maybe hunger isn't the issue.

Carbs and Whole Grains

Eating carbohydrates can be a love/hate relationship, but it doesn't have to be a guilty experience.

Good carbs are a necessary part of a healthy diet. Identify and choose the healthiest carbs, and what makes a whole grain better than a processed grain.

Healthy Eating Out

Too busy or too tired to cook? Going out for a big meal? Eating out does not have to derail your healthy eating plan.

Discover ways to make restaurant meals as healthy as they can be for either a quick meal any night or on that special occasion.

Nutrition Labels

Did you know you have access to 24/7 “nutritional counseling” for healthier decision-making? Food labels are a wealth of knowledge. They include serving size, calorie count, nutritional content, and percentage of recommended daily values.

Sodium

Salty foods taste great, but too much salt is bad for our health, especially our hearts.

What foods are hiding the most sodium, and how can we go about reducing it in our diets? Discover other options available for flavoring food when we cook.

Fats

“Fat” sounds like a bad word, but it might not be if we are choosing the healthy ones our bodies need!

Learn ways to incorporate healthy unsaturated fats into our diets and reduce the amount of unhealthy saturated fats.

Protein

Protein is an important nutrient that helps to rebuild our bodies from the inside out.

Identify high-protein foods that are low in saturated fat. What are plant sources of protein packed with vitamins and fiber? Protein choices are plentiful and plenty good!

Sugars

Sugar goes by many names such as fructose, sucrose, and maltose. Understand natural vs. added sugars and where to find them on a nutrition label. Doing so helps us to choose healthy, natural sources of sugar that are great for giving our body energy.

Mindful Eating

Fast eating on the go causes stress eating. Learn to slow down and savor taste and textures for relaxation and to support a healthy weight.

Stress Management and Relaxation (20 to 30 minutes each)

Is your typical day rushed? Do you feel overwhelmed? These topics will help you focus and breathe. Explore practical ways to manage everyday stress to feel calmer, more at ease, and ready to greet the day with a new perspective.

Meditation

By slowing the heart and breath rate, we allow the body to achieve its most restorative rest. Focusing on just one thought gives our minds and bodies the break they deserve.

Guided Imagery

Learn how to take yourself on a mini vacation anytime you want and let that happy place come to you. No airline tickets or hotel reservations are required.

Five Senses

Learn to rely on your five senses to help appreciate what is happening around you right now.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation

Learn how to consciously tense and release muscles to feel more relaxed.

Creative Expression

Everyone can be an artist and experience the benefits of creative expression. You’ll be provided with materials and helpful prompts to get the creative juices flowing.

Body Scan

Teach yourself to notice how you feel throughout your body so you can rest and let go. Our bodies have a lot of wisdom to share if we only listen.

Name That Feeling

Learn the practice of slowing down, putting a label to each feeling, acknowledging its presence, and then gently letting it go. This can help you feel less overwhelmed and more productive.

Worry Write/Thankful Write

Documenting worries and feelings of gratitude brings us clarity. It allows us to determine just how much power each emotion should have and lets us refocus our thoughts towards the positive.

Values Check

Dig deep into the concept of personal values, define and prioritize them, and determine how they can be helpful in the big picture of your life to reduce stress.

Using Music to Your Benefit

Music can ease pain, relieve loneliness, calm nerves, and soothe a crying baby. Identify how you can use music for support during times of stress or fatigue.

Self-Massage

Short self-massage can be very beneficial at relieving muscle tension brought on by stressful day. Give it a try!

Stretching

Learn how to melt away muscle stress with some gentle stretches. These stretches can be done easily in any space at any time you like.

Thought Interruption

Stress can be a result of our own internal thoughts. Learn to recognize some common negative threads and transform them for greater control and a more positive frame of mind.

Beginner’s Mind

Remember the excitement of seeing something for the very first time? “Fresh eyes” allow the opportunity for creativity and can relieve some of the stress of expected perfection.

We will evaluate the positive qualities of a beginner and practice applying them to current, real-life situations.
