Advanced Technology
UPMC Northwest offers advanced technology not typically seen in rural community hospitals. Our urologists provide minimally invasive treatment for many conditions affecting the bladder, kidneys, and prostate.
Rezūm® (water vapor therapy for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia)
Rezūm® is a procedure that injects steam into an enlarged prostate, encouraging the prostate tissue to shrink. Unlike traditional surgical procedures to treat BPH, which involve cutting excess prostate tissue, this procedure does not cause bleeding or affect sexual function. The urologists at UPMC Northwest are among only a few doctors in the region trained to use this procedure.
Laser treatment for kidney stones
In this method of kidney stone removal, the doctor uses a laser to break kidney stones into very fine pieces that can be passed easily through urine.
Blue light cystoscopy
Blue light cystoscopy uses narrow-banded imaging to view tumors during an endoscopic procedure. The blue light helps illuminate areas where tumor growth may be starting, enabling the doctor to identify and treat cancer in its early stages.
