Hirsutism

UPMC Content 2

Women who have hirsutism experience excessive hair growth in a male pattern.

This abnormal hair growth often happens in women who have a high presence of the male hormone, androgen.

Diagnosing Hirsutism

Hirsutism can be an indicator of an underlying medical condition — such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or puberty disorders — that may require diagnosis and treatment.

These underlying conditions may have direct implications on fertility.

Treating Hirsutism

Hirsutism treatment often focuses on hair removal, rather than what's causing the abnormal hair growth. Treatment options depend on patient and doctor preference.

In situations where the hirsutism is an indicator of another medical condition, the focus will be on treating that condition.
