UPMC Content 3

At the Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology (CFRE), we provide diagnosis and treatment options for uterine fibroids.

Uterine fibroids (also known as myomas or leiomyomas) are noncancerous tumors of smooth muscle tissues that can form within the uterus. Depending on their location, fibroids can change or distort the shape of the uterus b. Fibroids can be located within the uterine cavity, with in the uterine wall, on the outside of the uterus, or connected to the uterus by a stalk.

Fibroids are frequently asymptomatic but can cause heavy periods, abdominal pain or pressure, frequent urination, constipation, and infertility. Fibroids can cause infertility by changing the cervical position or uterine shape affecting the number of sperm and the movement of sperm to the fallopian tubes. Fibroids within the cavity can block the fallopian tubes or interfere with embryo implantation.

Fibroids are usually diagnosed by physical exam or ultrasonography but can also be seen on other radiology studies such as a CT scan or MRI. The treatment options for fibroids depend primarily on whether a woman’s symptoms, age, and desire to have children in the future.

Here at CFRE we offer medical as well as surgical management for uterine fibroids. Contact us to learn more about diagnosis and treatment options.
