How Child Abuse Impacts Children
By the age of 18, one in 10 children will suffer physical or sexual abuse. Nationwide, neglect is the most common form of abuse.
Of the child abuse cases in 2019 in the U.S.:
- Nearly 75% were neglect only.
- More than 17% were physical abuse only.
- Over 9% were sexual abuse only.
- Most (77.5%) were at the hands of parents.
Yet the statistics show a more complex problem where children experience more than one form of abuse. In 2018, more than 15% of kids suffered two or more forms of abuse.
Of confirmed cases for Lawrence County in 2020:
- 7% were neglect.
- 48% were physical abuse.
- 26% were sexual abuse.
