A Labor of Love for Growing Families

UPMC is the leading provider of women and infant service in central Pennsylvania, welcoming nearly 4,000 babies a year—and this number is expected to grow. After 20 years, Harrisburg’s “home” hospital is in need of significant upgrades, modifications, modernization and expansion of services. We want to give every baby, mother and family the best experience by improving patient access, privacy, security and comfort.

With the addition of two floors on the Alex Grass Medical Sciences Building, maternity services will be expanded so that all services are on parallel floors between the main hospital building and postpartum services. This uniquely designed space will include:

• A dedicated elevator located at the main hospital entrance that travels directly to the 8th floor welcome center.
• Enhancements to existing Labor and Delivery with eight new OB/intake exam rooms.
• The two new floors added to the Alex Grass Medical Science Building (corner of Second and Chestnut Streets).
• The 8th floor will house a maternity/postpartum unit with additional space for family members and enhanced technology.
• The new 9th floor will house a new, 42-private-bed, state-of-the-art Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
• A new operating room and upgrades to the current operating rooms.
• Dedicated space for lactation services.
