UPMC Bedford: Providing Timely, Life-Saving Stroke Care
UPMC Bedford is a certified Acute Stroke Ready Hospital (ASRH).
This means we offer immediate, evidence-based care to people who may have had a stroke.
After vital stroke treatment, ASRHs transfer people to another hospital certified as either a:
- Primary stroke center.
- Thrombectomy-capable stroke center.
- Comprehensive stroke center.
People with a stroke in our region often move to UPMC Altoona's Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center.
People who may have had a stroke must reach their nearest stroke center. Any level of stroke center can help.
Doctors at a stroke center can treat some stroke cases with clot-dissolving drugs. This must happen within a few hours of symptom onset to be effective.
But, these drugs are only helpful for some people. A focused stroke center has doctors who are experts in which people will benefit from these drugs.
Acute Stroke Ready Hospital Certification
The Joint Commission and the American Heart/American Stroke Associations award ASRH certificates.
To get ASRH classified, the hospital gets a thorough onsite review. They base the review on the Joint Commission's Advanced Disease-Specific Care framework.
The review checks that the hospital meets its rigorous standards.
These include:
- A stroke-focused team on-call 24/7.
- Health care workers trained in stroke care.
- Staff working together with local emergency teams.
- Rapid lab tests 24/7 to help doctors diagnose a stroke.
- Can give clot-busting medicine into a vein to people who qualify.
- Phone or video visits with a brain doctor within 20 minutes.
