The Problem: Lack of Female Role Models in STEM

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects computer and IT jobs to grow 11 percent from 2019 to 2029. This growth is much faster than the average for all careers.

But women still remain widely underrepresented in IT roles.

Diversity in tech is crucial. It allows better and safer products that account for everyone, not just one population or section of society.

Studies show some reasons women didn’t pursue the field include:

• The lack of female role models in STEM-based careers.
• The lack of mentors.
• Not enough hands-on experience with STEM activities.

The Solution: UPMC Women in Information Technology Outreach

The UPMC WIT External Outreach Committee’s goals are to use our skillsets and passion for IT to:

• Inspire female students and talent to pursue IT career paths at UPMC and beyond.
• Provide chances to learn about IT jobs by engaging schools, colleges, and civic groups.
• Support other women in their IT careers.

Outreach focus areas

• Middle school (grades 6-8).
• High school.
• College/professional.
• Workforce re-entry.

WIT outreach services

We work with our regional partners to inspire, support, mentor, and expose students and professionals to healthcare technology careers through:

• IT Career Exploration — panel discussions, targeted speaking engagements, etc.
• Mentorship — mentoring, job shadowing, and high school IT internships.
• Community Support — taking part in community events to promote UPMC IT careers.
• Events — hosting IT and women in IT events.
• Resume Review — providing resume reviews and input.
• Network — offering chances to network with one or more of UPMC’s current women in IT.
