Patient safety is UPMC's number one concern.
Properly identifying patients is the first step in safety in any health care system. Improper identification can result in treatment errors and wrong-person procedures, as well as privacy violations, billing errors, insurance fraud and even identity fraud.
That’s why UPMC in central Pa. requires all patients to show photo identification at registration. All patients age 18 or older are asked to present photo identification at registration.
In addition, for patient safety purposes, we will be taking the patient’s photo using a webcam to be applied to our emergency department’s electronic medical record. The photo will be stored in your file to identify you on your next visit. We’ll only need to take your picture once. This will start Jan. 1, 2015, in the Emergency Department, and then roll out to all other registration areas in early 2015.
Please note that no one will be denied care if they don’t have photo identification.
