Historically, kidney stones have occurred mostly in middle-aged Caucasian males. But we now know almost as many women as men are affected. We also know that kidney stones occur in many demographic groups, and children and older people can suffer from kidney stones as well.
The UPMC Kidney Stone Center is geared toward patients who have previously had stone surgery or passed a stone spontaneously. Our multidisciplinary clinic treats and manages kidney stone disease over the long term.
Patients are evaluated for both medical and dietary risk factors in stone formation through blood and urine studies. Based on this extensive metabolic evaluation, a unique treatment and prevention plan is designed for each patient.
Our dedication to multidisciplinary care means that the patient will be seen by a urologist with specialty training in the management of stone disease as well as a nephrologist, endocrinologist and nutrition specialist as needed. Together they will design a treatment plan that is appropriate for the individual patient, with the goal of achieving and maintaining a stone-free state. Our multidisciplinary clinic treats and manages kidney stone disease over the long term with a goal of prevention.
