At UPMC in Central Pa., we know that the best way to develop healthy habits is to start early. This is why we offer educational programs for kids that help set them on a path toward lifelong health.
Eat Smart, Play Smart
Eat Smart, Play Smart is UPMC in Central Pa.'s weight management program for overweight children and their parents. The class meets once a week for eight weeks and is a fun-filled program that helps overweight children (ages 6-14) and their parents or guardians develop lifelong healthy habits.
Eat Smart, Play Smart instructors are certified in nutrition, mental health and physical education. The curriculum uses interactive games, cooking demonstrations and kid-friendly discussion to help kids identify bad habits and choices and learn how to make healthier ones.
If your child's body mass index (BMI) falls within the obese range, he or she qualifies for this program. Registration is required and can be completed by calling the UPMC in central Pa. Phone Line at 717-231-8900. Classes are held at both East and West shore locations.
Girls on the Run
UPMC in Central Pa. has partnered with the Capital Area Girls on the Run council to bring this life-changing character development program to Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry county girls in third through eighth grades. The nonprofit organization's mission is to "inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running."
Girls on the Run envisions a world where all girls know their limitless potential and can navigate their lives with confidence and joy. This accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community.
Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. At each season's conclusion, the girls and their running buddies, complete a 5k running event.
