Our private specialized Epilepsy Monitoring Unit using advanced monitoring before, during, and after a seizure to help our Neurology team to develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient.
About Epilepsy Monitoring
At UPMC Harrisburg, our two-bed specialized Epilepsy Monitoring Unit helps providers:
- Establish what type of seizures you have
- Confirm a diagnosis of epilepsy
- Assess proper response to medical therapy
- Evaluate you for surgery options when medication has not worked
Using Electroencephalography (EEG), brain activity is continuously monitored with computer-based equipment designed specifically to evaluate seizure disorders. This advanced monitoring can gather data before a seizure starts, while one is occurring and during recovery. This information helps the Neurology team develop a treatment plan individualized for each patient.
What to Expect from Epilepsy Monitoring
You will have a private room furnished with a flat-screen television, Wi-Fi access, a sitting area and a recliner for a family member or friend to visit with you. Your room also has a private bathroom and shower. Nursing staff is specially trained to respond to seizures with your safety as the primary concern.
For the EEG exam, you will wear small electrodes that are attached to a computer, which collects and analyzes data to determine the severity of your condition and identify the area of the brain that is causing seizures. In addition, your activities are captured on film to provide neurologists a very clear picture of what happens when symptoms are active.
Neurologists review your recordings daily and discuss a plan of care with you and your family.
