Our three pulmonary function laboratories are staffed by trained specialists and are equipped with sophisticated technology to diagnose a variety of respiratory problems including:

• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Diagnostic Tests

Because lung disease can cause a variety of symptoms, comprehensive diagnostic testing is key to understanding the cause of your respiratory problems. Our specialists offer a variety of tests, including:

• Arterial blood gas analysis. Measures the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood and determines your blood’s acidity.
• Bronchoscopy. The diagnostic respiratory care staff assists physicians performing diagnostic bronchoscopy in our bronchoscopy suites within the relative hospital location. These procedures are arranged by the physician for in-patients and out-patients.
• Spirometry (pre- and post-bronchodilator). You will be asked to inhale to your total lung capacity, then exhale with full force into the spirometer to measure your forced exhalation. You may then be given breathing medicine to determine if there is improvement in your results.
• Lung volumes. Measures the total volume of your lung capacity which consists of the breath you can blow out and the air left in your lungs when you are done blowing out.
• Diffusion capacity. Measures how well your lungs transfer oxygen into the bloodstream and diffuse carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.
• Exercise saturation study. Evaluates how successfully you are able to get oxygen into your blood while exercising.
• Methacholine challenge. Evaluates unexplained coughing or possible asthma. You’ll have a series of spirometry tests followed by inhalation of increasing amounts of the chemical methacholine, which helps measure changes in airway function.
• Exercise induced asthma study. Determines if you suffer from exercise-induced asthma. Exercise-induced asthma is different from asthmatic reactions caused by allergens or irritants.
• High-altitude simulation test (HAST). Determines your risk of hypoxia in high-altitude situations, such as air travel or skiing.
