The curriculum for our Sports Residency Program offers many learning opportunities.
Residents will spend about 30 hours of weekly clinical care at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Pittsburgh's South Side, where UPMC Rehabilitation Institute is the outpatient physical therapy provider.
Training will include:
- Weekly mentoring with our sports and orthopaedic PT residency faculty (around 3 hours/week).
- Weekly Sports Conference — The University of Pittsburgh Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
- Weekly Grand Rounds presentations — The Pitt Department of Physical Therapy (DPT).
- Monthly journal clubs and "Mortality and Morbidity" conferences.
You'll also assist teaching the entry-level DPT program's musculoskeletal class series at Pitt.
Our residency program faculty teach weekly didactic courses on:
- Managing disorders of the spine, foot and ankle, knee, shoulder, and hip.
- Exertional concussion management.
- Running analysis.
Sports Residency Program Completion Requirements
- Pass all body part specific practical examinations with a score of 80% or higher.
- Pass midterm and final live patient examinations with an average score of 7/10 (where 7/10 is above competent clinician, 5/10 is competent clinician, and 10/10 is clinical specialist).
- Pass final written examination with a score of >70%.
- Complete a minimum of 150 clinical mentoring hours.
- Additionally, residents must:
- Complete specialty practice observations.
- Demonstrate regular attendance at Residency Rounds, University of Pittsburgh Department of Physical Therapy Grand Rounds, and Sports Conferences.
- Complete all didactic coursework and athletic venue coverage as assigned.
