Chandan K. Sen, MS, PhD is the Professor and Director, Pitt McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Associate Vice Chancellor, Life Sciences Innovation and Commercialization, University of Pittsburgh, and Chief Scientific Officer for Wound Care, UPMC. Dr. Sen focuses his research efforts to tap into the power of regenerative medicine and engineering to heal burns, develop new therapies for diabetic complications, treat injured soldiers, and even regrow damaged and diseased tissue.
Stephen Badylak, DVM, PhD, MD is the Deputy Director of the Pitt McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Director of the Center for Pre-Clinical Tissue Engineering at Pitt McGowan and a Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Badylak focuses his research on extracellular matrix, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, biomaterials/tissue interactions, immunology and its response to tissue regeneration and clinical translation.
Patrick Cantini is the Strategy and Business Development Officer at the Pitt McGowan Institute. He is also a member of the Institute’s Executive Management team focusing on conceptualizing and formulating strategic initiatives that result in short- and long-term growth of the Institute. This includes the development of innovative programs and activities to expedite technology translation; identifying and securing key community, government, and industry alliances on a regional, national, and global level; assessing the regenerative medicine field to identify emerging trends; improving project/program efficiencies; and recommending new initiatives to grow the Pitt McGowan Institute.
Dr. Shomita S. Steiner is the Director of Scientific Operations for the McGowan Institute. She also holds a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery. Dr. Steiner is tasked with strategic scientific vision planning and organization of scientific operations, including communication, engagement, and reporting with federal agencies, non-federal agencies, and industry. Additionally, Dr. Steiner has extensive experience in managing scientific linkages with intra and extramural research groups and supporting center funding initiatives and innovation.
Kim Burns is the Director of Finance and Operations for the Pitt McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, Kim held several positions at Indiana University and has over 15 years of finance, research administration and operations experience.
Darleen Noah is the Director of Fiscal Operations for the Pitt McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. Darleen has over 38 years of experience in research administration, finance and operations spanning several centers, departments, divisions, and institutes at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC. Darleen is a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators (since 1986) and the Society of Research Administrators (since 1990) and is a Certified Research Administrator (obtained in 2003).
Brian Smith is the Director of Fiscal Operations for the Center for Military Medicine Research as well as the Department of Plastic Surgery. Brian’s research administration experience includes fifteen years as a senior member of the fiscal operations team at the Pitt McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. During his tenure, he has been instrumental in managing special projects and tasks requested by his Department Chairs and has ensured that the general ledger, accounting transactions and personnel reporting are maintained in accordance with GAAP, University policies and procedures and other external requirements from federal and state governments, private industry, and philanthropic sources.
Brent Toto is the Pitt McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine’s Director of Industry Partnership. He is tasked with developing corporate research opportunities for the institute and its faculty members.
