Diabetic retinal exams (DRE) are available for diabetic patients at select UPMC Primary Care offices in Southwest Pa.
If you have a history of diabetes, your blood sugar level may cause changes in the blood vessels of your retina. These changes may not be noticed by patients but can lead to diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of vision loss and/or blindness.
Early detection, timely treatment, and appropriate follow-up can help protect against vision loss. Your PCP can refer you for a DRE and then perform the exam — right in the office. The DRE is a quick and painless test that’s conducted with state-of-the-art camera. The images of your eyes and health information are sent to an ophthalmologist for review. If needed, your PCP will follow-up with a care plan.
