UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute Moves to Outpatient Center in Mechanicsburg

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — UPMC has opened a new outpatient center at 2020 Technology Parkway, Mechanicsburg, continuing its growth on the campus of UPMC West Shore and across central Pa. The 44,000 square-foot facility features relocated and expanded offices for UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute. The outpatient center is the largest Heart and Vascular Institute facility in the UPMC system, providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art heart and vascular services to the community in central Pennsylvania and beyond.

"This facility is a testament to how important advanced cardiovascular care is at UPMC in Central Pa.," said Dr. Hemal Gada, president of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in central Pennsylvania. “In addition to basic cardiology services, the new center will offer all the advanced consultative services we have available at many of our other locations. We will continue providing world-class care close to home to this community, facilitated by cutting-edge clinical research.”

Five years ago, UPMC became part of the health care landscape in central Pennsylvania, and since then, it has grown to 13,000 providers and staff, and UPMC has invested $910 million in central Pa. health care services.

The new state-of-the-art Outpatient Center features, among other things, a cardiac rehab space, advanced cardiac imaging technology and a heart failure center, bringing UPMC’s vascular surgery and vein center services to the west shore. All services based at UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in Wormleysburg will relocate to the new facility.

Patients receiving care at the facility will benefit from groundbreaking research and have access to more than 100 clinical trials that are underway at UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute. UPMC experts lead trials as national principal investigators in multi-institutional studies, enabling the team to bring the treatments of tomorrow to UPMC today.

Physicians of the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in central Pennsylvania provided more than 130,000 patient appointments last year. A pioneer in cardiovascular health since 1956, the team was the first in the region to perform open heart surgery and the first to perform coronary artery balloon angioplasty. Other "firsts" include the implantation of a drug-eluting coronary stent, percutaneous (minimally invasive) aortic valve procedures (TAVR) and implantation of the FDA-approved percutaneous mitral valve device.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. In 2020, one in every five deaths in the United States was from heart disease. Chronic disease management care, including for heart disease, is a consistent “significant health need” in central Pennsylvania, according to UPMC’s Community Health Needs Assessments.
