Volker Musahl, MD

Volker Musahl, M.D., is the medical director of international sports medicine, and medical director of the UPMC Rooney Sports Medicine Complex. He also is program director of the sports medicine fellowship program, and a professor of both bioengineering and orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, as well as chief of the Division of Sports Medicine and program director of the Sports Medicine fellowship program.

 

Musahl is an orthopaedic surgeon and is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine. He currently serves as the co-head team physician for the Pitt Football Team and co-director of the Orthopaedic Robotics Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a multi-sport athlete himself, having competed in duathlon world championships for the U.S. national team.

 

Musahl is a world-renowned sports surgeon and has performed knee and shoulder surgery on many international professional football players. He specializes in sports medicine and provides comprehensive care for patients of all ages with injuries to the knee and shoulder. His research interests include bioengineering research of the knee and shoulder. He is assistant editor-in-chief for the journal Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy and is recognized by Best Doctor's Inc. on the Best Doctors List in Pittsburgh Magazine.  

 

After receiving his medical degree from Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in Germany, Musahl moved to the United States where he completed his residency at UPMC, followed by a fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
