Brian Hagen, Ph.D., P.T., a sports medicine physical therapist, works with athletes and non-athletes at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. Dr. Hagen’s patients include professional, elite amateur, and local recreational athletes and those who would not consider themselves athletes but want to maintain or regain physical mobility and independence after musculoskeletal injury.
Known especially for physical therapy for injury prevention and rehabilitation involving the spine, Dr. Hagen helps patients recover from injury, prevent injury, or sharpen performance for demanding physical activity and helps athletes manage injury while enhancing sports performance.
Dr. Hagen is a clinical assistant professor at Pitt’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, where he is responsible for instruction in musculoskeletal evaluation and treatment. At UPMC, he is the programming administrator at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex and serves as the regional director for the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute outpatient locations, north central division, overseeing operations for 15 outpatient centers.
An expert on sports medicine and on back pain, Dr. Hagen has been published in the Journal of Physical Therapy, Orthopaedic Clinics of North America, and several national and local newspapers. He is often interviewed by local and national news media as an expert on sports medicine physical therapy.
Dr. Hagen received his bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology from Slippery Rock University in 1989 and his master’s degree in physical therapy from Slippery Rock University in 1991. He received an advanced master’s degree in orthopaedic physical therapy in 1996 and his doctorate degree in physical therapy in 2006, both from the University of Pittsburgh. He is credentialed as an Orthopaedic Certified Specialist by the American Physical Therapy Association, and as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Therapists.
