When Albert Lin, MD, was just a kid, he knew Freddie Fu, MD, and came to know the impact he was making in orthopaedics and sports medicine. It inspired him to go into the field himself. Dr. Lin is now chief of shoulder surgery and associate chief of sports medicine at UPMC.
“I see the whole spectrum from elite athletes to young high schoolers, weekend warriors, professionals who just need to get through their day-to-day for issues like rotator cuff tears, and I see 60-, 70-, 80-, and 90-year-olds with terrible shoulder arthritis,” says Dr. Lin.
“Freddie always taught us to continue learning. We have the resources and minds for it, and we have motivated people. We get into this job to improve quality of life, to help people get back to whatever it is they want to do, whether that’s their job, sports, or just raising their arm so that they can wash their hair and put on their shirt. If I can do those things, that is a great day for me in the office.”
