Find Breastfeeding Support at UPMC in North Central Pa.

Breastfeeding is an excellent source of nutrition for your baby, but some women may experience challenges or discomfort with this method of infant feeding. At UPMC, experienced lactation consultants are available to provide expert support, suggestions and encouragement.

  • UPMC has certified IBCLC consultants and certified lactation counselors to help new mothers learn to breastfeed. Tips on breast care for breastfeeding mothers are also made available before the mother leaves the hospital.
  • A prenatal breastfeeding class is offered to cover the basics of breastfeeding, the advantages and other tips for mothers and families of breastfeeding mothers.
  • A nursing mothers group called Baby Cafe gives mothers the chance to meet other moms, share stories and work with counselors to help facilitate the breastfeeding process. At these meetings, babies are given weight checks to ensure their growth is on target and that the mother is producing enough milk.
  • Outpatient lactation appointments can be made for mothers and babies requiring additional follow up after they leave the hospital. This visit will provide a review of mother and baby history, assessment of mother-and-baby, breastfeeding evaluation, pre- and post-feed baby weight check, feeding plan and report to the physician. Contact your baby's doctor for a consultation order. then call the lactation team to schedule an appointment.
