As one of the few dedicated women's programs in the nation, and the only program in Pennsylvania, the Women's Neurology Division at UPMC specializes in the comprehensive care of women with neurological conditions.
Our focus is on understanding the unique health care needs of women with neurological illnesses and how those needs intersect with other life events such as contraceptive use, pregnancy, and a cancer diagnosis.
Preconception Counseling and Pregnancy
Our team of neurologists cares for women with neurological disorders who are either pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Conditions we manage and treat for women of child-bearing age include:
- Epilepsy
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Migraine
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Meningioma
- Idiopathic intracranial hypertension
- Wilson's Disease
Childbirth and Neurological Illness
We specialize in caring for women with neurological illness who need special consideration during childbirth. Conditions we manage and treat include:
- Brain tumors
- Arteriovenous malformations
- Chiari malformations
- Cerebral aneurysms
- Increased intracranial pressure
- Neurofibromatosis
- Spina Bifida
Women's Cancers
We provide services for women with neurological complications of breast, uterine, vaginal, and ovarian cancers. Conditions we treat include:
- Metastasis to the spine and spinal cord
- Metastasis to the brain
- Leptomeningeal metastasis
- Paraneoplastic syndrome
- Cerebral venous thrombosis and stroke related to cancer-induced hypercoagulopathy

Our experts collaborate with doctors at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, one of the largest obstetrical hospitals in the country.
To better understand women and neurological illness, our team utilizes the Magee Obstetric Medical and Infant (MOMI) research database, a unique resource that has information on births at Magee since 1995.
