Types of Cardiothoracic Surgery We Offer at UPMC

Cardiothoracic surgeries we perform in Williamsport:

  • Coronary artery bypass surgery. Used to treat coronary artery disease, this procedure utilizes blood vessels from other areas that are grafted to the artery to restore blood flow.
  • Valve replacement and repair surgery. A treatment option for heart disease, especially heart valve disease, this is a noninvasive procedure to maintain the patient's own mitral valve architecture when possible.

Robotic Assisted Surgery

The da Vinci® Surgical System provides an alternative to both traditional open and conventional laparoscopic surgery, putting the doctor’s hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform. The da Vinci System enables our doctors to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision.

Benefits to the patient from surgery include a shorter length of recovery time. Because the operation is performed laparoscopically, it is less invasive and requires small punctures rather than a large incision, meaning less time is required to heal. Most patients return to normal activity in two to three weeks instead of the six to eight weeks common to standard open surgery.
