Colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure to examine the lining of the large intestine (colon) for abnormalities (polyps). This procedure may be recommended by your doctor in order to evaluate symptoms you are having, such as bleeding or chronic diarrhea, or for your proactive screening for colorectal cancer.

Preventing Colon Cancer

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancerous deaths in the United States. If caught early, colorectal cancer is 90% beatable. All men and women should be screened for colon cancer beginning at age 50, if not earlier. If you have a family history of colon cancer, you should get a colonoscopy before the age of 50.
