HARRISBURG, Pa. — All six UPMC sleep labs in central Pennsylvania have recently received full accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The AASM is the only professional society dedicated exclusively to the medical subspecialty of sleep medicine. It sets standards and promotes excellence in sleep medicine health care, education and research.

“This recognition from the AASM is a testament to the world-class care that UPMC provides to our patients,” said Dr. John Levri, director, sleep medicine, UPMC in Central Pa. “We recognize that sleep issues may be a result of many conditions. At UPMC, our comprehensive program includes multi-specialty providers who work together to provide expert diagnosis, treatment, and management for sleep disorders. Our mission is to combine excellent clinical skills with world-class technology to provide high-quality plans to support improving the health of our community.”

To receive accreditation, sleep centers must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care, and quality assurance. Additionally, the sleep center’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

There are a variety of sleep disorders. Some are common, like insomnia, while others are rare. About 70 million people experience sleep disorders each year. Understanding how lack of sleep affects your health can allow you to make healthier decisions for you and your family.
