Louis D. Falo, Jr, MD, PhD, is chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Under his leadership, the department was first in National Institutes of Health funding among the top 34 academic dermatology programs in 2008.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Falo has authored or co-authored nearly 50 articles, papers, and book chapters on cancer research, including the use of dendritic cells and gene therapy for treatment of various cancers. He has patented several methods of delivering important components of vaccines, or antigens, into the body.
Dr. Falo has earned numerous honors, including the Wellcome Cancer Research Award in 1992, the Clinical Investigator Award from the National Institutes of Health, also in 1992, and the Young Leadership Award from the American Dermatology Association in 1996.
After graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from Pitt, Dr. Falo earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and his doctorate in immunology from Harvard University. His post-graduate work included a position as a research associate at Harvard Medical School; an internship in the Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; a residency in the Department of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School; and a research fellowship in lymphocyte biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
