Assistant dean for managed care and associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, Chairman and chief executive officer of University Pharmacotherapy Associates, an American Council on Pharmaceutical Education-accredited business founded in 1989 dedicated to excellence in national pharmaceutical education systems, clinical advisory panels, pharmaceutical industry strategic consulting, disease management, and expert pharmaceutical litigation evaluation
Dr. Vanscoy’s area of research specializes in anticoagulant therapy and he has published a number of scientific papers, received educational grants, provided numerous lectures, and served on many national and international committees on the subject. He is on the editorial board of several scientific journals including section editor of the Journal of Thrombosis and Thrombolysis.
Dr. Vanscoy received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 1984 and completed his PharmD. degree at Duquesne University in 1986. Dr. Vanscoy later completed a residency at Mercy Hospital, followed by an internship at the University of Pittsburgh Geriatric Education Center. In 1991, Dr. Vanscoy completed his master’s degree in business administration at the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business. In 1999, Dr Vanscoy became certified as an anticoagulation care provider.
Dr. Vanscoy served as a member of the Information Sciences Expert Advisory Panel for the United States Pharmacopoeia and, as a director of the executive board of the International Society of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Research. He is the founder and member of National Credentialing Board for Anticoagulation Care Providers.
Previously, Dr. Vanscoy was executive vice president and chief operating officer at Stadtlanders / CVS ProCare. Prior to that, Dr. Vanscoy was vice-chair of the department of pharmacy and therapeutics. Additionally, he founded the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Drug Information and Pharmacoepidemiology Center. He was also an active member of the University of Pittsburgh Biomedical Institutional Review Board. In addition, he developed anticoagulation clinic services and obtained prescribing privileges at the Pittsburgh Veterans Affairs Health System where he remains consulting director. Dr. Vanscoy is also executive consultant for the UPMC department of pharmacy and therapeutics.
Dr. Vanscoy is a member of many professional and scientific organizations including the Society for Critical Care Medicine, the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, the Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honor Society, the American Pharmaceutical Association, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the Pennsylvania Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
