A Registered Nurse is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for patients needing dialysis as inpatients at UPMC Western Maryland or for emergency needs.
Nephrology Consultations
If you and your primary care provider are concerned about your kidney function, please contact the UPMC Western Maryland Nephrology/Dialysis Teams to schedule a nephrology consultation.
A consultation can cover inpatient and outpatient evaluation and management of acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, hypertension, electrolyte abnormalities, kidney stones and hereditary kidney diseases.

- Transient dialysis for patients from out of town: If availability allows, we provide dialysis treatments for patients who are visiting from out of town. We also arrange dialysis treatments for our patients who travel out of town.
Dialysis Team Members
- Nephrologist – Our Nephrologists specialize in diseases of the kidney and will consult with you throughout all stages of kidney disease.
- Nurse Practitioner
- Nurse Manager
- Clinical Care Coordinator/CKD and ESRD Transitionists – Our ESRD Clinical Care coordinator/Transitionist consults with dialysis patients when they are in the hospital or outpatient dialysis setting and provides education support to ensure optimal outcomes for dialysis patients. Our CKD Transitionist provides education and follow up for patients who have chronic kidney disease but do not yet need dialysis.
- Registered Nurse – Experienced Nephrology Nurses are on staff to assess and monitor you during your dialysis treatment.
- Dialysis Technician – Our Dialysis Technicians are Certified Nursing Assistants who have been certified by the Maryland Board of Nursing to assist the Registered Nurses in providing hemodialysis treatments.
- Biomed Technicians: Our biomed technicians keep our dialysis and other patient care equipment in optimal working condition.
- Dietitian – Our dietitian will consult with you during the early stages of kidney disease and also help you manage your dietary needs if you ever have to start dialysis.
- Social worker – Our Social Worker is an expert in navigating patient services that are available including transportation needs and insurances. They can also help arrange dialysis appointments for you if out of town travel is ever necessary.
Chronic Kidney Disease Education Classes
The CKD Education program assists patients with understanding Kidney Disease, management of Chronic Kidney Disease, and treatment options.
If you have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, you may have many questions about it and how it affects you. You and your family are invited to attend our Chronic Kidney Disease education program that provides useful information about kidney disease, including diet and treatment options.
The two-hour session includes presentations by a nurse, registered dietitian, and a social worker, and allows plenty of time for your questions.
