Making an Appointment

Call your office or use our online scheduling system to plan a visit with a UPMC PCP. Our staff will work with you to find a time that fits your schedule.

Your First Visit With a UPMC PCP

Your first visit to a primary care provider forms the basis of a relationship that will ideally last for years.

Your PCP is the doctor who gets to know you best.

You'll go to them for:

  • Routine physicals.
  • Medicare Annual Wellness Visits.
  • Follow-up or sick visits.
  • Vaccines.

Your PCP also can manage chronic health concerns like diabetes, heart disease, or asthma.

Preparing for Your First PCP Appointment

For your first visit, plan to arrive at least 20 to 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. This will let us get the details we need to register you.

Please bring the following with you:

  • Personal and family medical history.
  • Complete list of medicines and doses that you take, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, supplements, and herbal medicines.
  • Name and phone number of your pharmacy.
  • Insurance card and photo ID.

After your first visit, continue to bring your insurance card, photo ID, and list of medicines to every appointment.

It's also a good idea to check the supply of all your medicines before your visit. If you're getting low, your PCP will discuss refills with you and may write a new prescription during your visit.

If You Have to Cancel Your PCP Appointment

Because your time is valuable, we ask for a 24-hour notice if you need to reschedule or cancel a visit.

If you miss a visit, we'll call you to reschedule.

Referrals to Other Health Care Experts

If you need to see a specialist, your PCP can refer you to the right expert.

We work closely with care teams throughout the UPMC system.

Lab Work and Imaging

If your PCP recommends lab work or an x-ray, we suggest you visit a UPMC lab or imaging center.

Co-pays and Billing

You should discuss payment with your PCP's office before your appointment. If you have an insurance co-pay for office visits, please pay that at the time of your visit.

Common forms of payment we accept are:

  • MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express.
  • Flexible spending cards.
  • Healthcare savings account cards.
  • Debit cards.

UPMC accepts many health insurance plans. We ask that you check with your health plan if you have questions about your coverage. You're responsible to pay any non-covered charges.

In An Emergency

If you're having a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room (ER).
