How Ob-Gyns Can Help Your Mental Health During and After Pregnancy

Your ob-gyn sees you more often than any other doctor during and after pregnancy. That's why they're a vital part of our behavioral health team.

At UPMC Magee, our ob-gyns:

  • Screen women for depression and anxiety at each visit.
  • Help connect women to mental health care.
  • Can manage mental health medicine during and after pregnancy.

How OB Social Workers Can Help

Our OB or perinatal social workers specialize in pregnancy and postpartum mental health care.

They:

  • Work in many settings such as hospitals, doctor's offices, and community groups.
  • Support women during hard times, including grief and postpartum depression or intrusive thoughts.
  • Help women as they pursue therapy, substance use programs, or other mental health care.

How Psychiatrists and Psychologists Can Help with Postpartum Depression

A psychiatrist is a doctor with special training in mental health. They can prescribe medicine such as brexanolone — the first FDA-approved drug to treat postpartum depression.

A psychologist has a license in mental health care counseling and treatment.

At Magee, both work together to treat behavioral health conditions in women.
